Tiger Limited Edition Tefaf Edition 2022

This series of carpets has been created in collaboration with Mt. Refuge as a celebration and an artistic revival of the rich legacy of Himalayan carpet tradition. Traditional carpets are a ubiquitous emblem of Himalayan culture and craftsmanship, the skill having been passed down over generations through the women of the family. They are a staple in everyday life as well as auspicious occasions, and hence carry the stories and history of the Himalayan people. The boom in the carpet industry from the 60s onwards led to this art form seeping into the cultural and commercial fabric of Nepali society, with Himalayan carpets becoming one of the chief exports of the country. However, poor management and lack of adequate support systems have relegated this industry into a dying craft in the present day.
Thus our intention in revisiting the art of Himalayan carpet making is to acknowledge the history, skill and philosophy behind this practice. By reimagining the visual dynamics within the traditional Himalayan art form and reintroducing it to a modern sensibility, I speak to the contemporary concerns and aspirations of the Himalayan diaspora and the world at large. Hence it was essential for me to work with a studio that puts traditional craftsmanship, knowledge as well as care for the community at its core. Through this collaboration with Mt. Refuge, we honor the legacy of Himalayan art and craftsmanship while envisioning a future where we revisit our own culture through a contemporary lens. We are honored to have shared this collection with the broader audience through our participation at the Art Basel Hong Kong this past year with Rossi and Rossi as well.

TSHERIN SHERPA

We are delighted to have the opportunity to bring the dragon year exhibition to Kathmandu, following our success at Art Basel Hong Kong 2024.

Our core vision, has always been to elevate Tibetan-Nepalese rugs into the realm of fine art, and in recent years we have seen this aspiration come to life. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Tsherin Sherpa for his unwavering belief in our mission and for initiating this meaningful collaboration.

At Mt. Refuge, we deeply appreciate everyone who has taken their time to attend this exhibition. To our dedicated supporters, this achievement would not have been possible without you! Thank you.

A proud milestone!. We are showcasing two rugs that are now part of the museum collection at the Asian Art Museum in Berlin, Germany and the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art in New Delhi, India.

Having our collaborative rugs in these esteemed institutions is an incredible honor, and fuels our passion to create aspiring rugs that serve as a platform to tell our stories, preserve and reimagine our heritage, to transform tradition into our magnificent contemporary rugs.

We hope you enjoy our exhibition!
