New York Times Feature: Himalayan Art on the Global Stage
August 19, 2019
We are proud to announce that The New York Times has featured Mt. Refuge in its article “A Panorama of Design.” For us, this moment represented a rare instance of Himalayan art entering the global cultural conversation.
For generations, Nepalese weaving has existed as a living tradition, passed quietly from master to apprentice. Though celebrated locally, its philosophical depth and technical refinement have rarely been acknowledged on an international stage. To see our work highlighted by The New York Times is therefore a milestone not only for Mt Refuge, but for Himalayan art as a whole.
The feature underscores a growing awareness that the Himalayan region is not only a source of spiritual philosophy, but also of design language — one that can stand alongside any of the world’s great artisanal traditions. Our carpets are uniquely handwoven with symbols such as the tiger, the dragon, and the trung trung, each carrying centuries of meaning. Their recognition in a global publication reaffirms that these cultural stories resonate far beyond the mountains.
This is the first time a Himalayan atelier has been featured in The New York Times. For us, it is a reminder of the responsibility we carry: to preserve and reinterpret this heritage so it can be seen, understood, and celebrated across the world.
